Another Cast Earth house, finished Fall, 1997, in Northern Arizona. The owners are Jenn Scott and Kevin McKean. The house is now occupied by the owners. The home is 1,800 square feet.

This wall demonstrates the use of pigments to achieve architectural interest via color striations in Cast Earth. Four earth colors supplement the natural hue, and were added intermittently as the Cast Earth was mixed. The effect is dramatic, much more so than can be illustrated in these low resolution images. It would be very difficult to achieve a similar embellishment by any other building technique.
This is a wall segment, again showing the use of pigmented strata. Many other embellishments are possible. For example, interesting rocks can be embedded in the Cast Earth as it is poured, and coarse aggregates can be selectively or completely exposed after the forms are removed. The material is a casting mix, and lends itself to molding bas reliefs which are integral to the wall surface, as illustrated here.
